Is BoxCloud P2P?Yes and more. BoxCloud is really a peer to web application (p2web) that combines the best of the desktop (p2p) and the web. The problem with just P2P is that it requires both the sender and the recipient to be using the same software which is not always practical. You'd have to make everyone download some software just to be able to share files with them. Instead BoxCloud harnesses the ubiquity of the web and allows people to access your files using just a web browser. The files, of course, reside on your machine and are served up P2P style - reliable, secure and with swarming across multiple machines. BoxCloud essentially turns your desktop into sort of a private web server - You get to keep your files on your desktop where you work and make them accessible to your clients over a regular browser. What platforms does BoxCloud support?BoxCloud has been tested to run on Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.4+. While other versions of Windows and Mac OS X will probably run BoxCloud just fine, we are not able to officially support them today. Do I need a broadband connection?Yes. Since you serve up files directly from your machine, the faster your Internet connection, the faster the file download. On a cable/dsl connection, you typically get file transfer rates between 40KB/sec and 100KB/sec. Do my clients need to download BoxCloud? No. Your clients can access your files using a regular browser without having to download or install anything. Note however, that while BoxCloud does allow your clients to preview certain files types (images, photoshop files, pdfs, etc.), they still need some software to be able to open the downloaded file. Do my clients need to create a BoxCloud account? No. We wanted to make it dead-simple to share and dead-simple simple to view files. When you first share a file with someone, we create a private, self-expiring alias link to the file which is sent to your client over email. The alias link is good for 7 days and does not require your client to login or create an account. We chose to expire the link so as not to keep an open link to your desktop for too long. If your client needs to access the file after that time, they simply need to create a free BoxCloud account. They'll then be able to see all files you share with them in one place and also be able to filter, sort, search and upload files directly to your desktop. Do I have to be online to share files?Currently yes. All files and folders are hosted directly from your desktop which means that your computer needs to be online when people access the files. We are working on providing a file caching option that will allow you to mirror your files on other servers which will let them be available even if your desktop is offline. Do you provide phone support?Yes. You can call us during regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm CST). In addition, we respond to all support emails usually within a few hours and no later than 24 hours. Lastly the forums are a great resource to look for answers or ask questions. |
