Is my machine publicly accessible to anyone?

No. While BoxCloud looks like a regular web server, it's only accessbile from your local machine (mapped to localhost) and through our P2Web gateway servers which montitor all traffic and use SSL and 256-bit AES end-to-end encryption to ensure that only trusted people can access your files.

Does BoxCloud work behind NATs and firewalls?

Yes. BoxCloud has been tested with most common NAT and firewall configurations and should just work out of the box. You don't have to open any ports or reconfigure your router to use BoxCloud. When you first start BoxCloud, look for the connection status in the system tray. If the BoxCloud icon turns blue, you're set and ready to go. If your status indicator stays gray, please drop us a line and we'd love to try and figure out what's going on.

You can also run a connection test which is a menu option when you click the system tray icon which will tell you whether your BoxCloud is accessbile or not.

Where are my files stored?

Your files are stored on your desktop where they belong - you work on a desktop, not on a server. You never have to worry about multiple copies of the file on some server, manage around storage limits or wait for long uploads. Plus, many companies have strict policies against storing confidential data on hosted servers. With BoxCloud, your data never leaves your desktop so you're always in full control.

Is my data backed up?

BoxCloud automatically and periodically backs up it's database which stores all the data about what you're sharing, with whom, etc. Note: Your files remain in your file system and are not a part of this backup.

Can I export my data?

Yes. You can export your BoxCloud data as RDF from the File->Backup BoxCloud menu. Your BoxCloud data stores all the metadata about your BoxCloud account - what you're sharing, with whom, workspaces, contacts, comments, etc.
